Alhamdulillah… Endless praise and thanks are due to the Almighty Allah. I send peace and blessings upon Habibi Muhammad, his household, his companions and all those who follow his guided path, till the Day of Judgement.
The dictionary defines a person of hypocrisy (the hypocrite) as: a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold, in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives.
In Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:8, the Qur’an describes the hypocrites as those “who say, “We believe in Allāh and the Last Day,” yet they are not believers…”
Below are some facts and characteristics of the hypocrites:
- No group or enemy has ever posed danger for Islam as much as the hypocrites have done and are still doing. Why? Because…
- They openly claim to be believers (Muslims) and are seen as such. Thus;
- They live with the believers (publicly). But…
- They always (secretly) deal with the disbelievers and have to report to them. As a result…
- They always have two different personalities: Muslim and non-Muslim personality. For that…
- They die in the state of hypocrisy.
- Even if Ṣalāh al Janāzah is performed for them, they can't benefit from it.
- They end up, in the Hereafter, in the same destination as the infidels.
- They are always grouped (in the Qur’an) with the disbelievers.
- Their mentions in the Qurʾan are more detailed compared to the disbeliever, and even compared to the believers.
- They are cowardly alert, and measure every word you say to them, and take it into account.
- They possess filthy hearts; full of hatred (towards Islam), jealousy (of true Muslims) and corruption (in the land).
- They never encourage righteousness. How can they, when it’s against their principles?
- They are always uncomfortable when Allāh is mentioned. Therefore;
- They pray for show. When believers achieve tranquility and comfort from prayers, they are stressed during prayers. They will do all it takes to delay it, if they can’t stop it.
Conclusion
These are some of the characteristics of the hypocrites that I could put down, off my head. Although they are the permanent characteristics of the hypocrites, some ordinary genuine Muslims may (in fact they do) possess some, but not all of them.
The difference between the hypocrites and the genuine Muslims when they portray some of these characteristics is that, the hypocrites portray them out of principles and beliefs. They have developed them as a result of their intention to cause corruption on earth. Whereby, the genuine Muslims do so out of weakness, and sometimes ignorance.
It’s worth mentioning, that the hypocrites can’t destroy the religion of Allāh. But they can negatively influence on my faith and yours as well. This influence is our tests, and we must pass the test.
The bad news is, we can’t eliminate them from amongst us. This is not because they possess power or authority (although they are powerful). It’s rather because their presence is part of our tests in this life. The best person who could have eliminated them was the Prophet Muhammad, ṣallā Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam, but Allāh didn’t enable him to do so. After all, how can you take some one out of Islam, when he claims to be a Muslim?
All we can do is to constantly pray to Allah, that He cleanses our hearts from hypocrisy and protects us and our loved ones from their evil doings.
May Allah guide us, and grant us more love for Him, love for those who love Him and love for the deeds that will bring us closer to His Love. Amīn.
