What is the Qur’an?

Literally, Qur’an means the oft-read book.

Technically, the Qur’an is the miraculous words (book) of Allah, revealed and descended upon The Prophet Muhammad ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam through the Angel Jibrīl ‘alayhi al-salām. It reached us through authentic linkage (sanad). Reciting any part of the Qur’an is ibādah. Also, the Qur’an starts with Surah Al-Fātiḥah and ends with Surah Al-Nās.

Now pay close attention to the beings, things, times, and places that connected to the Qur’an. Then see how they transformed from being ordinary stuff to sacred in nature.

The Influence of the Qur’an

The Qur’an influences anything it comes across. But it never gets influenced. For instance, we all agree that the Qur’an is a sacred book. And we should remember that it earns some of its sacredness to anything that comes in connection with it.

Every word is a word. But when it comes from God, it becomes a sacred word. Thus, it’s noble in nature. And thus, as it transits and spreads, anything it makes contact with becomes sacred and attains some level of significance.

The Qur’an was kept in a tablet before it was descended to first Heaven. It was later on revealed to the Prophet over a period of 23 years. This tablet has since been called the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ). This is the tablet Allah describes as a well-protected register. This well-protected register can only be accessed by the noble Angels.

Although all the Angels are noble, Jibrīl attains a leadership role, since he was honoured and appointed to be the Angel who descended with the Qur’an and other revelations to the Prophet (as well as to all other Prophets and Messengers).

Jibrīl ‘alayhi al-salām descended with the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad. This means, the moment revelation of the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet marked the moment he formally became of chosen Prophet of Allah. In fact, he became the master to all of the chosen Prophets and Messengers of Allah.

When the Qur’an was descended to the lowest skies, it happened at night. That night has since been known as the blessed night and the night of the decree. This is the night all of us patiently prepare for and await, come every Ramadan.

The blessed night happened in Ramadan. Thus, the month of Ramadan has emerged as the blessed month. To the extent that when Allah informs us about the prescription of the Qur’an, He indicates that, looks, the Qur’an was revealed in this month. Perhaps, for us to take fasting in the month as seriously as are ought to take the Qur’an.

Now, we all know that the Qur’an descended in Makkah and Madīnah and the places between them. These are the places we all yearn to go. These are the places every Muslim loves dearly. These are the places every Muslim wish to take his last breath in.

We also know that the Qur’an was revealed in the Arabic Language. While every language protects its literature to secure its survival, the Arabic Language has attained everlasting protection with the Qur’an. Simply because the Qur’an is an everlasting word. You know that you’ll be reading the Qur’an in Paradise. Don’t you? I don’t think you assume to read it in English or Africana. Do you?

You’ve seen how the Qur’an influences anything it connects with. It’s time to highlight why you should remain bonded with it, or re-establish that bonding if you’re losing it.
