Alhamdulillah… infinite thanks and praises are due to the Almighty Allah at all times. Complete peace and blessings, greetings and salutations are upon our Beloved Prophet, Sayyidunā Muḥammad, his household, his companions and all those who follow his guided path.
This article comes to guide the Muslim to the precautions he can take to protect himself and his loved ones amidst the outbreak of the new Coronavirus which emerged as an epidemic in China and has started to spread around the world.
Your Preventive Measures Against the Coronavirus
There are two main precautions which the Muslim can protect himself and his loved ones against the outbreak of the Coronavirus and all similar viruses. They are:
- Spiritual Precaution
- Hygienic and Medical Precautions.
Spiritual Precaution
As for your spiritual preventive measures, we learn that what Islam has taught us to read and do in order to be divinely protected by the Creator against the evil of all His creations. And his creations include sicknesses, viruses and whatsoever cause them.
Therefore, the following are what a Muslim can do to be spiritually protected. Against Coronavirus as well as other deadly viruses or anything harmful.
The First Thing to Read:
Read the following du‘ā’, three times in the morning and three times in the evening.
“In the Name of Allah with Whose Name there is protection against every kind of harm in the earth or in the heaven, and He is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing.”
In a ḥadīth reported by Imām al-Bukhārī from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, who says that he heard the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying:
“A person who says, “In the Name of Allah with whose Name nothing in the earth or the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,” three times in the morning and three times in the evening, will not be harmed by anything.”
Also, in a ḥadīth reported by Imām al-Tirmidhī, also from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, he says that he heard the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying:
“There is no worshiper who says, in the morning of every day, and in the evening of every night: ‘In the Name of Allah, with whose Name, nothing in the earth or the heavens can cause harm, and He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.’ three times, (except that) nothing shall harm him.”
The Second Thing to Read:
Read the following du‘ā’, three times in the morning and three times in the evening:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
“I seek the protection with Allah’s Perfect Words from the evil of whatever He has created.”
In a ḥadīth reported by Imām Muslim from the narration of Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, a man came to the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam and said, “What a trouble I suffered from a scorpion which stung me last night!” The Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Had you said in the evening, “‘I seek the protection with Allah’s Perfect Words from the evil of whatever He has created.’ it would not have harmed you.”

Hygienic and Medical Precautions
As for your hygienic and medical precautions, according to a CNN Health article, you can protect yourself, hygienically by doing the following:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Cook your meat and eggs thoroughly.
- Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing and sneezing.
- Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
- If you’re feeling unwell, clean and disinfect objects and surfaces you touch.
- If you suspect you have coronavirus (or any deadly virus), wear a surgical mask.
Having taken all the above precautions, the Muslim must always remember that nothing kills or takes away his soul. In other words, no one dies prematurely. Everyone dies only when his predestined time comes for him to move on to the next life. Therefore, whether it’s the Coronavirus or another deadly virus or anything harmful, all it can incur upon you is some pain. And the extent of that pain, whether it’s predestined to lead to one’s death or not, the extent of that pain is determined by Allah. However, that one thing the Muslim can never afford to lose or miss is good ending; that is to pass on as a pure and true Muslim. May we and our loved ones be granted good ending. Āmīn!
May the infected people recover soon. May God bless and protect the medical frontliners who risk their lives to ensure the safety of the rest of us. And may you and your loved ones be protected from all evil. Āmīn.
