Introduction

Alhamdulillah… Infinite praise and thanks are due to the Almighty Allah, the Healer and the Curer. Complete blessings and salutations go to the best man, who ever practiced and approved ruqyah, Sayyidinā Muhammad, his household, his companions, and all those who follow his guided path.

In life, we are destined to strive and persevere in pursuit for survival and happiness. Thus, when we go hungry, we must strive to get not only the healthy, but the righteous nutrition. When we impoverish, we must strive to provide for ourselves and our loved ones from halal sources. When we lack the knowledge, we must seek the right and relevant knowledge. Similar to all that, when we fall sick, we must seek treatment. All these come in many different ways and forms.  Ruqyah is one of the ways we seek protection and treatment to stay healthy and vibrant as we continue the compete towards the eternal abode.

This article is an introduction to Ruqyah. It presents the concept of Ruqyah, together with some materials which are helpful in seeking spiritual protection and treatment against evil spiritual encounters.

This article may not be lengthy. Actually, it is 🙂 . But it’s rich with videos, audios, texts and many useful and related links. All to answer to your learning and treatment needs, inshā Allah.

To better understand the need for ruqyah in the life of man, it’s important to know that the desperate state we live in, in this life pushes all of us for survival. When pushed, and you really have to decide, it’s either you ‘fight or flight.’ If you choose to fight, you must fight gentlemanly. Fighting gentlemanly means doing things the right way. The good news is, when you choose the right way, you’re safe. However, the problem is that many of us, most of the time will opt for the wrong way. And that’s where and when involving black magic, fortune-tellers, sorcery, jealousy and evil eye come in. You may not opt for the wrong channel. But when someone opts for it, you may be the target. Thus, it’s important to have preventive measures.

In a previous 4-part series of articles, I discussed sorcery and fortune-telling from Islamic and social perspectives. Part 1 explored sorcery and fortune-telling in Islam. It further elaborated on the differences and commonalities between the two on one hand, and illusionism on the other hand. It also indicated the ruling of sorcery and fortune-telling in Islam. And it concluded by identifying what it means to seek help through sorcery and fortune-telling. To read the article click here.

Part 2 explored the factors that influence people’s decision to go and seek help from sorcerers and fortune-tellers. Four crucial factors were identified. To read the article, click here. As for Part 3 it presented and discussed 8 reasons the Muslim should avoid sorcerers and fortune-tellers. To read it, click here. In Part 4 of that series, we learnt how to seek protection against the effects and harm caused by magic and evil.  You may read the article by clicking here.

In the next sections, we’re seeking to understand ruqyah and the difference between spirituality and superstition, and then move on to some of its applications.

What is Ruqyah?

Ruqyah is widely translated as spiritual healing. But I choose to translate it as spiritual treatment. A sick person heals from sickness or injury when he recovers, or his condition improves. But treatment is the process he undergoes for the healing to kick in. This mean, treatment is provided by man. But healing or cure is granted by the Healer and Curer, Allah subḥānahū wa ta’ālā!

Doing ruqyah (treatment) is not a guarantee that one will heal from whatever he might be suffering from. But when Allah cures the person, even without ruqyah treatment, the patient will heal and recover.

This is to say, ruqyah is one of the various forms of treatment available. Forms of treatment include physical, i.e., surgery, therapy, massage. It also includes medical, whether by consuming western (chemical) medicines or traditional herbs and foods, i.e., honey, dates, black seeds, garden cress seeds, olive oil and its leaves, plain water and many more. And among the forms of treatment we have is ruqyah which covers a spiritual treatment and protection.

When we talk about ruqyah, we must also clear any doubts in the Muslim’s mind regarding superstition and its relationship with ruqyah.

Spirituality and Superstition

When we talk about ruqyah, we’re also talking about fighting against unseen powers, the effects of which is felt by the victims, and sometimes, can be seen in their behaviours and interactions. The thing is, the human nature is such that, it believes in what it sees as opposed to the unseen. For instance, the only way you can believe that your loved one is suffering from a headache is when you see him weak, helpless. Otherwise, his claim of suffering from a headache will only be accepted based on the trust you have for him.

The good news is, when we talk about ruqyah, it’s far away from superstition or dilution. Simply because Islam confirms the unseen world and the many unseen creatures, all of which interact with us, in a way or the other. Furthermore, the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam has affirmed the existence of jinn, as well as he discussed with his companions about evil eye and the destructive force of jealousy. This trashes any claim that may imply that ruqyah is superstition, dilution or psychological reactions.

If this is clear, why not we move on to the different forms of ruqyah? If it’s not clear, feel free to communicate that in the discussion area below this article.

The Different Forms of Ruqyah

To put it differently, ruqyah is actually a form of du‘a, which we are committed to doing in many ways in our daily life. Do you spend some three minutes after every obligatory prayer to say adkhār, read your Ayatul-Kursi? If you do, then you’ve been practising a form of ruqyah. Have you been reading some dhikr before you go to sleep every night? If you do, then you’ve been actually practising some form of ruqyah. What about saying ‘bismillāh’ before eating? That’s also a form of ruqyah. Think of what you say before entering your home, leaving your home, entering the washroom, going out of the washroom. All these are different forms of ruqyah, which we do in different occasions.

This is whether we call it ruqyah, du‘ā’, or dhikr. It stands as ruqyah because we are seeking protection and treatment against the effort of some unseen forces and effects.

However, for some reason, it has emerged as conventional wisdom, that ruqyah is read or sought after, only when there’s a possession, spiritual disturbance or suspect of sihr (black magic). The truth is, these instances require a comprehensive performance of ruqyah, or a dedicated treatment if you will, in other words, a professional ruqyah intervention. But on our daily basis, we do perform ruqyah, knowingly or otherwise.

Since ruqyah is meant for spiritual treatment, it will be a good idea to outline what ruqyah does for you and what it doesn’t. What do you think?

What Ruqyah Doesn't Do

As we embrace Ruqya, it’s important to take note, that Ruqyah doesn’t do the following:

Ruqyah Doesn’t Replace Your Basic Obligatory Prayers

Praying five times a day is a common sense in Islam. Islam can be flexible about almost everything, but not your faith and prayers.

One of the nullifying factors of ruqyah is that the person who receives it refuses to pray or the one who performs the ruqyah is not committed to his 5-times daily prayers. You must pray. It’s no coincidence, that we’re enjoined to adhkār (which are a form of ruqyah) after every obligatory prayer.

Ruqyah Doesn’t Suffice Your Need for Eating Healthily

Ruqyah doesn’t suffice your need to lead a healthy lifestyle. Thus, you must watch your food to sustain an effective immune system and to maintain your weight. You must also eat healthily, to avoid contacting contamination or infections. You must eat moderately to allow your body to function in a way that will allow you to carry out your religious, social and other duties efficiently.

Ruqyah Doesn’t Suffice Your Need for Fitness

Likewise eating healthily, you must exercise to remain fit. You must be active to ensure flexibility. You must constantly do some stretches to allow your blood to circulate effectively. Although he indicates that they both possess good, the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam emphasizes, that “the strong believer is better and beloved to Allah than the weak believer.”

Ruqyah May Not Replace Your Need for Other Form of Treatment

Please note, that in addition to ruqyah, you may still need the seek other forms of treatment; a medical treatment, or professional intervention, if one is suffering from depression or some mental issues. Even if the ruqyah is effective for you. The Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam is the best practitioner and teacher of ruqyah, yet he sought medical treatment, and did encourage us to seek medical treatment.

What Ruqyah Does

Ruqyah, as defined above, is a form of treatment. It reflects the effort you put in to seek spiritual protection or treatment. This is similar to the effort you may put in to seek medical attention, check-up or physical therapy or massage.

With that, we understand, that Ruqyah does the following:

Ruqyah Protects and Prevents Against Spiritual Harm and Disturbances

Yes, ruqyah protects and prevents you against potential and possible spiritual harm or disturbances. This is achieved with the adhkar we read after obligatory prayers. It’s also achieved through the adhkar we recite before going to bed, when entering your homes or going out of your home. Also, it’s achieved when entering the washroom or going out of the washroom. What about when riding a vehicle or traveling? I believe you recite the du‘ā’ the Prophet taught us regarding them. That’s also a form of ruqyah. In fact, the morning and evening adhkar, which I believe you are committed to, is one of the most effective ruqyah the Muslim performs.

The ruqyah we perform in the above instances are mostly passive. Simply because they’re preventive measures, and because we don’t see any potential dangers in front of us, we, mostly perform them passively.

Ruqyah Provides Treatment for the Attack Evil Eyes and Jealousy

Despite the preventive measures we take, we’re still vulnerable to harms. The good news is, our vulnerabilities are protected most of the time. However, sometime, Allah tests us by allowing us to be targeted. In such situations, we are affected. Thus, when we’re affected or attacked, ruqyah is there to provide spiritual treatment. This time, against evil eye and jealousy.

It’s worth emphasizing, that evil eye and jealousy are two different things. In other words, everyone among us has an evil eye. I do, and so do you. It’s a built-in, in every son of Adam. In fact, it strikes when you’re impressed, awed, or amazed by something, whether it’s related to you, your loved one, your relative, friend or even enemy. It’s so powerful and penetrative, that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam encouraged us to say “Māsha Allāh… Lā quwwata illā billāh.” whenever something impresses us.

That’s for evil eye. As for the destructive force of jealousy, it strikes when you wish to have something that someone is bestowed with, worst still, if you wish the destruction of the person’s blessing or fortune. It’s a two-way traffic; just like you may affect someone, be prepared to be affected too.

Here, I must claim, that evil eye and the destructive forces of jealousy is widespread and affecting most of us than any form of spiritual disturbances. If you’re affected from someone, who could even be your loved one, just accept the fact that it’s possible that someone is affected by yours. One of the du‘ā’ included in the morning and evening adhkār as well as adhkār before going to bed tackles this.

What Are the Symptoms?

How would one know that he’s affected by evil eye or jealousy? I can’t produce evidence from the text, but I can claim that almost 7 in every 10 people you see are affected with evil eye and jealousy. One of the common symptoms is that you yawn and shed tears (not crying) the moment you stand for prayers, read the Qur’an or listen to anything related to religion or good. Are there any more symptoms? Perhaps yes. But I don’t have knowledge about them yet. Either way, and whether you can recognize the symptoms on yourself and on your loved ones or not, you’re ought to take preventive measures.

“How do I prevent my evil eye from harming others?” you may ask? Say “Māshā Allāh” whenever anyone shares something good about themselves with you. If, instead of supposedly being happy, for your loved one or anyone, you happen to feel sad in your heart (that’s jealousy, because you’re human), make du‘ā’ in your heart for them. Make du‘ā’ that Allah blesses that bestowal for them. You don’t have to tell them. Let it be between you and Allah.

And the Solution?

That’s how you can prevent your evil eye from harming others. Now how do can you protect yourself against others evil eye and jealousy?

An audio and PDF files of verses and du’a for ruqyah for evil eye and jealousy treatment are included in the Audio and PDF Folder below. Before you listen to this Ruqyah, please take note of the following:

  1. Make a sincere intention that you’re seeking cure and protection from Allah through Ruqyah.
  2. Please put on your earpods, if possible.
  3. Listening to the Ruqyah will take you two hours.
  4. Please only listen to it when you are at home, or in a comfortable place, where relatives can attend to you, in case your body reacts. In other words, you’re not encouraged to listen to it while driving or in public.
  5. It’s not necessary that your body reacts for the Ruqyah to be effective.
  6. However, if your body reacts aggressively to a given verse(s), then refer to that verse(s) in the PDF file provided, and repeat reading it as many times as you can.
  7. If your body’s reactions persist, then please seek to consult someone trustworthy who can perform a comprehensive (dedicated) ruqyah for you.

Ruqyah Treats Black Magic and Jinn Possessions

Ruqyah protects you and shields you against the effects of black magic and being possessed by the jinn. It also treats you, if you happen to be affected by them. The difference between the destructive forces of jealousy and black magic is that, jealousy stays in the heart, where the person may not take any action to really cause distraction to you. But for sihr, it’s when the person acts and performs rituals, involving the jinn, for your destruction. Unarguably, sihr is almost always driven and motivated by jealousy.

In a nutshell, a jealous person may not be involved in sihr. But anyone involved in sihr is a jealous person!

What Are the Symptoms?

Do you feel angry with your loved ones for no apparent reasons? Do you long for your spouse, and suddenly you become cold at the point in mating? Do you feel uncomfortable in your home, for no apparent reason? Do you have continuous nightmares, where you see snakes, cats, reptiles and cockroaches? These are some of the symptoms that could be an indication of the presence of black magic (sihr) against you or in your house. Note that I say, “for no apparent reason.” If you happen to have watched a horror movie before going to bed, any nightmare you might have is likely to be as a result of the movie. And that’s the apparent reason.

And the Solution?

An audio and PDF files of verses and du’a for ruqyah for evil eye and jealousy treatment are included in the Audio and PDF Folder below. But before you listen to this ruqyah, please take note of the following:

Therefore, I would like to request that you don’t consider me as a professional ruqyah provider. You can expect that I apologize to any invitations for sa uch purpose.
