Alhamdulillah… Infinite praise and thanks are due to Allah the Almighty. Complete peace and blessings are upon the Final and Seal of Messengers of Islam, Sayyidunā Muhammad, his household, his companions, and all those who follow his guided path.
Background
It’s often said by some Muslims as well as by non-Muslims, that Muslims are very sensitive about their religion. Muslims can be very emotional about their religion. And they react fast pertaining to what they perceive as offensive towards their religion.
Well, when the word sensitive is used in a vague statement, the common implication that comes to mind is fragility, naiveness, and weakness. In fact, that too can be understood depending on the person’s viewpoint.
However, if we are to look at it from a Muslim viewpoint, the word sensitive is not offensive, and it, actually rightly describes Islam well. When you are sensitive towards something, it means one thing. It means that thing is pure and perfect. It means that it’s the only thing you have, it was given to you with care and hence, you must treasure it.
On that basis, one can comfortably claim that Muslims are the most sensitive humans about their religion. This is true, even though Muslims differ in the extent of religiosity and commitment toward Islam itself.
Now, what are the five reasons Muslims are so sensitive about Isam?
5 Reasons Why Muslims Are So Sensitive About Islam
Yes, this article confirms any opinion that opines or implies that Muslims are sensitive about their religion. To prove that, the following are 5 reasons that justify why Muslims are sensitive and should continue to be sensitive about Islam.
Islam Represents Purity and Cleanliness
Look out for anyone who dons a clean outfit and doesn’t want it to catch dirt. How does he interact? How does he conduct himself? As long as he cares about the cleanliness and image of his outfit, he’ll be quick to clean it, anytime it’s stained.
This purity and cleanliness are dynamic in nature: spiritual, physical, and consumption wise.
Spiritually, you can only worship one God, the One and Creator. And to do that effectively, you must also adhere to His commands and abide by His boundaries.
“They were commanded only to worship God, offering Him sincere devotion, to be sincere in their faith, to pray regularly; and to give alms, for that is the right religion.” (Sūrah al-Bayyinah, 98:5).
With that, the Muslim should sensitive to anything, or anyone who promotes polytheism or encourage to it or normalizes it.
Islam is the One and Only They Can Subscribe to
Physically, A Muslim can only subscribe to Islam. It doesn’t help to subscribe to Islam and other religions of any sort. This is simply because Islam is the religion that God has preferred for mankind. It’s the only religion recognised by God Himself.
إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّـهِ ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمُ
“The only true religion in God’s sight is complete submission to God.” (Sūrah Āl-‘Imrān, 3:19).
In other words, if Muslims are not sensitive about their religion and safeguard it with their jaws, can they afford to meet God without religion?
And no, to Muslims, Islam is not like a shirt you buy off the shelf, and then simply change or replace it if it doesn’t fit you, or if you simply can’t make yourself comfortable with it. Once you subscribe, you must fit it and plan your life according to it.
Islam is the Perfect Religion
Besides being preferred and the only recognised religion in the Sight of Allah, Islam is also the religion perfected by God for His slaves. This is easily understood when we learn that Islam completes the messages of Prophet Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Dāwūd, Sulaymān, Ya’qūb, Yūsuf, Mūsā, ‘Īsā and all the other chosen messengers and prophets of God.
With revelation descending upon the Prophet Muhammad, which declared him as the Seal of all Prophets, Islam was perfected.
“Today I have completed your religion for you and completed My blessing upon you. I have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Sūrah al-Mā’idah, 5:3)
It’s worth indicating here, that a Muslim will only look elsewhere to complete his needs if he fails to find it in Islam. When this happens, it’s never because Islam doesn’t have the solution. It rather means one of two things. It’s either he has not learned Islam enough, or he refuses to humble himself and submit to what Islam has prescribed upon every Muslim. Sometimes, this happens when one gets oblivious about the purpose of his existence on this earth.
Islam was Passed on to Us Responsibly
The Prophet Muhammad ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam did not leave this world until he has perfectly accomplished the mission of conveying the Message of Islam to mankind.
As much as he perfected it, he has also passed it on to the Ummah in a very careful and responsible manner.
Just as it was to The Prophet Muhammad ṣallā Allāhu ’alayhi wa sallam, Muslims are fully aware, that Islam is not entertainment. Islam is for worshiping Allah and working on attaining His pleasure.
Had that not been the case, the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ’alayhi wa sallam would have compromised and accepted the proposal of Quraysh, who sent him a delegate asking him to have collaborative worship sessions between his religion (of monotheism) and their religion (of polytheism).
Islam is Our Most Valuable Treasure
I can’t imagine someone who treasures his treasure, yet he handles it carelessly. A careless person can only describe a careful peer or buddy as sensitive.
Otherwise, any wise person, who happens to treasure something knows what it means to treasure one’s treasure.
And for Muslims, we may lose anything (despite the pains that may happen in the process) but not our faith. No matter what happens, our faith must remain intact.
Believers, fear God as is His due, and when death comes, be in a state of complete submission to Him. (Surah āl-‘Imrān, 3:102).
Conclusion
Regardless of how people define ‘sensitive’, and regardless of what ‘being sensitive’ implies, the Muslim should never be taken aback if he is ever perceived as sensitive about Islam, his one and only religion.
Your living Islam today is for your own good. However, just as scholars and righteous Muslims of the past safeguarded the purity of Islam to preserve it for us, we have the responsibility to also devote our life to safeguarding its purity and preserving it for generations to come.
May Allah see us through.
Until our next article, I leave you in Allah’s protection.
Wassalamu ‘alaykum warahmatullāh…
Allah knows best.
Allahu Hafiz 🙂
